The Hermit
Today's Message
The Hermit connects deliberate solitude with discernment, study, and guidance. Its small lantern in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition can symbolize enough understanding for a next step rather than certainty about a whole path. Solitude may support reflection, but the card does not establish that anyone needs to withdraw or that other people's guidance should be dismissed.
Use the Hermit's position to examine discernment: as Advice, compare reflection with seeking guidance; in Present, ask whether inward attention describes the situation at all. A reversal may turn insight inward, indicate a need for reconnection, or complicate access to solitude. The surrounding cards and reader's experience determine which interpretation is useful; the reversal alone does not establish avoidance.
Try this today
Consider what becomes clearer with time to think and what would benefit from another person's informed perspective. Neither solitude nor advice needs to become the only source of understanding.

Take this card into a personal readingGo deeper
An old man stands alone on a snowbound peak in a gray cloak, head bowed. In one hand he lifts a lantern holding a six-pointed star; the other leans on a staff. He has climbed above the treeline and above the noise. The lamp lights only the next few feet of ground — enough to walk by, and never more than that.
Symbolic layer
In early Italian decks this trump was Time, an old man holding an hourglass; it later became the Hermit, the hourglass traded for a lantern. Smith's 1909 version sets him alone on a snowbound peak, a six-pointed star of light inside the lamp, a staff steadying his climb. As the ninth card, he is the solitary wisdom gathered at a cycle's end.
Be mindful of
Reversed, the Hermit can suggest insight turning inward for integration, difficulty finding useful solitude, or isolation that no longer supports the person. Internalization may be constructive; it is not automatically avoidance or the opposite of the upright meaning. Distinguish these possibilities through the question, neighboring cards, and the reader's own account of what the quiet makes possible.
Reflect
- 1.Where are introspection, solitude, guidance already shaping a choice today?
- 2.What changes if you meet The Hermit's tension directly instead of rushing past it?
