Origins & Symbolism
The Empress is tarot's Great Mother — the Venus figure of abundance and generation. Smith's 1909 scene gives her a crown of twelve stars, a heart-shield marked with the sign of Venus, a robe of pomegranates and a field of ripening wheat. As the number three, she is what the union of one and two produces: fruit, growth, the world made fertile.
