Origins & Symbolism
Early decks called her La Papesse, the Popess — a scandalous figure sometimes tied to the legend of Pope Joan. Smith's 1909 version seats her between the temple pillars Boaz and Jachin, behind a veil of pomegranates, a crescent moon at her feet and the Torah scroll half-hidden in her lap. She guards knowledge that reveals itself only when you are ready.
