The Hierophant
The Hierophant is card 5 of the Major Arcana, the spiritual counterpart to The Emperor’s temporal authority. Seated between two pillars, wearing the triple crown of spiritual mastery, he teaches the sacred traditions to two acolytes who kneel before him. The crossed keys at his feet represent the keys to heaven—sacred knowledge passed through lineage.

Upright Meaning
Seek the wisdom of those who walked before you. There is value in tradition and shared knowledge. Find your teacher or become one.
Reversed Meaning
Traditional paths no longer serve. Question established wisdom and forge your own spiritual understanding. Institutional authority may be misplaced.
Love & Relationships
Commitment, shared values, and traditional relationships. The Hierophant often appears around engagements, marriages, or decisions to formalize a partnership. In love, it asks: do you share the same fundamental values?
Career & Finances
Mentorship, education, and working within established institutions. This card favors teaching, counseling, religious or spiritual vocations, and any career where wisdom is transmitted. Seek a mentor or become one.
Health & Wellbeing
Traditional or established healing methods may serve you well right now. Consider consulting experienced practitioners. The Hierophant also governs the throat and hearing.
Guidance
“There is wisdom in tradition, but not all traditions serve every person. Take what resonates, leave what doesn’t, and respect the teachers who helped you discern the difference.”
