Between two stone pillars, a priest in the triple crown raises his right hand in blessing and holds a staff with three crossbars. Two tonsured acolytes kneel below, one robed in roses and one in lilies, receiving what he was given by whoever sat there before him. Crossed keys rest at his feet: the doors open, but only in order.
Origins & Symbolism
Where the High Priestess keeps inner mystery, the Hierophant — the Pope of older decks — keeps the public, institutional faith. Smith's 1909 image gives him a triple crown, a triple-barred staff, two acolytes kneeling to receive doctrine, and crossed keys at his feet. He is the keeper of inherited knowledge, the tradition passed down in order from whoever held the seat before.
Reading It For Yourself
Ask whether your question is one someone has already solved — the Hierophant usually says yes, and points to the teacher, the training, the proven way. As advice he says learn the form before you break it; in a future slot he can mean a mentor, a marriage, an institution you join.
