A table before him holds a cup, a sword, a pentacle, and a wand — all four suits, laid out and ready. One hand lifts a wand toward the sky, the other points to the ground: as above, so below. A lemniscate floats over his head, and roses and lilies crowd the frame, desire disciplined by clarity.
Origins & Symbolism
In the earliest Italian decks this card was Il Bagatto, a street conjurer or juggler working his table of tricks. Waite and Smith reimagined him in 1909 as an adept: the four suit emblems laid before him, one hand raised and one lowered for as above, so below, the lemniscate of infinite will overhead. Number one is the first act, pure initiative.
