The Lovers is the card of alignment — the choice that reveals what you actually value, not what you claim to.

Upright meaning
Two people stand unguarded in front of each other, and something honest becomes possible. This card is about choosing — a person, a path, a version of yourself — with head and heart saying the same thing. Union follows alignment; it never precedes it.
A man and a woman stand naked beneath the angel Raphael, whose wings open against a blazing sun. Behind her rises the tree of knowledge wound with a serpent; behind him, a tree of flame. She looks up at the angel, he looks at her — desire routed through something higher than desire. A single mountain stands between them, and neither figure is covering anything.
Origins & Symbolism
Older tarot showed this card as a young man choosing between two suitors, sometimes with Cupid poised above. Waite and Smith recast it in 1909 as Eden: a naked man and woman beneath the angel Raphael, the tree of knowledge and its serpent behind her, a tree of flame behind him. It became a card of union built on conscious, values-level choice.
Reading It For Yourself
Read past the obvious romance to the choice underneath. The Lovers asks what you actually value, not what you claim to. In a present slot it marks real intimacy or a fork in the road; as advice, choose with head and heart agreeing. Test whether your behavior matches your stated values. Reversed, the two have split — you want what you said you didn't, or stayed past the honesty.
