Upright meaning
The situation will not yield to force, and you already sense that. What is wild here — your anger, someone's volatility, an appetite you keep fighting — answers to steadiness instead. You are more capable than the fear suggests. Keep your hand gentle and do not look away.
A woman in a white robe bends over a lion and closes its jaws with her bare hands, unhurried, almost affectionate. A chain of roses circles her waist and loops down to the animal's neck. Above her floats the lemniscate, the same endless figure that crowns the Magician. She is not fighting the beast. She befriended it, and it allowed her.
Origins & Symbolism
Strength personifies the classical virtue of Fortitude, once shown as a figure taming a lion or breaking a pillar. Smith's 1909 woman closes the beast's jaws with bare hands, a chain of roses around it and the lemniscate of infinite power above her head. Waite numbered it eight, swapping its old place with Justice to fit the sign of Leo, the lion.
Reading It For Yourself
What feels wild in your question — anger, appetite, someone's volatility — is what Strength concerns, and it never yields to force. It answers with the soft hand: patience outlasts pressure. As advice, stay steady and do not look away; in a present slot, you are more capable than your fear reports. Reversed, the lion is loose, or you have gripped so hard that control has become its own problem.
Love
Tenderness does the work that arguing cannot. Someone here needs patience rather than a verdict — a partner's fear, a temper, an old wound flaring again. Hold steady without absorbing the damage. Compassion is not the same as tolerating everything.
Reversed
Reversed in love, Strength marks the composure cracking — jealousy or temper running the conversation, or its quieter twin: swallowing everything and calling it patience. Gentleness that never sets a boundary is not strength; it is fear wearing its clothes.
Bring this into a reading →Career
Composure is your advantage in a room that expects volume. Difficult colleagues, hostile negotiations, and long projects all bend toward whoever stays regulated the longest. Persist quietly; the credit arrives later than you would like and larger than you expect.
Reversed
Reversed for career, confidence has slipped — the room feels like it must be forced or fled. The lion here is usually your own doubt; feed it steadiness, not adrenaline, and take the small brave action before attempting the large one.
Bring this into a reading →Wellbeing Reflection
For wellbeing, Strength offers a symbolic prompt around courage, patience, compassion. Notice what helps you feel supported and what you may want to discuss with someone you trust. Tarot cannot assess symptoms, diagnose conditions, or predict health outcomes; bring medical concerns and treatment decisions to a qualified healthcare professional.
Bring this into a reading →Strength: Yes or No?
yes
Strength is a yes won gently — through patience, steadiness, and nerve held under pressure. Force will lose this one; composure wins it.
Ask your own yes/no question →Guidance
Stay soft and do not let go. The thing you are afraid of will calm down long before you do.
