The Devil
The chain is real, you fastened it yourself, and that means you are the one who can unfasten it.

Upright
Upright meaning
You have made peace with the thing that has hold of you: the job you stay in for the money, the drink, the person you keep answering. The Devil deals in willing bondage. Look honestly at what you get out of the arrangement — that is the part keeping you in it.
A horned figure crouches on a black half-cube, one hand raised in false blessing, an inverted torch in the other. Below, a naked man and woman stand chained by the neck — horned now themselves, tails grown, small flames and grapes at the tips. The chains hang loose around their throats. The loops are wide enough to lift off. Neither has tried.
Origins & Symbolism
The Devil borrows the horned, bat-winged demon of medieval Christian art, seated on a black half-cube with an inverted torch and a hand raised in false blessing. Waite and Smith staged it as a dark mirror of the Lovers — the same man and woman, now chained beneath the figure. The loose loops around their necks are the whole point: the bondage is willing, and removable.
Reading It For Yourself
Look at the chains first and notice they hang loose. Ask what you get out of the arrangement that holds you — that payoff is the real link. In a present position it names a willing bondage; as advice, it says speak the bargain aloud. Reversed, the chain is coming off, so name what you are ready to decline. Attach it to one concrete attachment, not a vague vice.
Love
Desire that overrides judgment, or an attachment that has quietly become dependence. The heat is real and so is the cost. Ask whether you are choosing this person daily or simply cannot picture leaving. Those are different relationships.
Career
Golden handcuffs: a salary that has been buying your silence, a title you tolerate cruelty to keep. Run the real math on what the compensation costs you in hours, health, and self-respect. You are less trapped than you have decided to be.
Health
Compulsion, dependency, or the pattern you defend the moment someone names it out loud. The defending is itself the symptom.
Guidance
Say the arrangement out loud — to yourself first, then to one other person. Most of getting free is admitting the deal you struck.
